Call to Action!
Hello Friends. Things are moving rapidly in Annapolis now and critical gun safety legislation is about to hit the House floor for a vote. It is time to start calling, emailing, and tweeting Maryland Delegates and letting them know that Maryland citizens want gun safety passed! Here is what you need to know!
The U.S. Supreme Court significantly weakened Maryland Public Carry of Firearms permitting system that was previously one of the best in the nation and had been for 50 years. In the wake of that decision, we’ve seen a 400% increase in wear, carry permits granted in the state. While many gun owners honestly feel like carrying a gun makes them safer, the research clearly shows that more firearms in public spaces makes everyone less safe. Maryland must respond by strengthening the permitting process in a way that more effectively vets people who have demonstrated a propensity for violence and otherwise dangerously irresponsible behaviors. In addition, strengthening our child access prevention law to include older teens is critical to keep guns out of the hands of our youth and people who should not otherwise have access to a firearm. Guns are the number 1 cause of death for Maryland’s youth! Safe gun storage avoids unintentional gun injuries and incidents where a youth in crisis is seeking to harm themself or someone else. It further reduces incidences of gun theft thereby reducing the number of guns that enter into the criminal market. This is especially critical when more people are taking firearms into public spaces with their permits. If their firearm is not within their immediate possession or control, they must practice safe storage.
We are also urging support for a voluntary Do Not Sell list. This law would enable someone who is concerned that in a moment of crisis they should not have an easy path to acquiring a gun, to add their name to a list which would prohibit them from purchasing a firearm.
