Tell Gov. Hogan to Protect Violence Prevention Efforts
Please send an email using the form below to urge Governor Hogan to sign SB 708 and fund local programs that are proven to prevent violence. Thank you on behalf of the Maryland Violence Prevention Coalition!
Gun violence in America is an epidemic, and Maryland is not immune. However, we have evidence-based strategies that will mitigate this crisis. Local violence intervention and prevention programs are a proven and cost-effective approach to reducing violence and saving lives.
In 2018, Governor Hogan signed legislation establishing the Maryland Violence Intervention and Prevention Program (VIPP). This program ensures that more violence interrupters are able to serve the communities at the highest risk for gun violence.
The program has been severely underfunded in past years, limiting the number of people that it can reach. In response, this year the legislature passed SB 708 to allocate $3.6 million to critical programs reducing violence in Maryland. However, the Governor has yet to sign the bill and release these much needed funds.
